I can't believe I did this. I had an early basketball game tonight so I had to skip out on work, find a slice somewhere, go home, get ready, and make it to the game by 6pm. Ok, perfect, there's a slice joint by work that opens at four so I'll leave at 4:15, slice it up, and hit the road. It's 4:18 and the warmer is empty. "About ten minutes," she says. 10 minutes?!? You've been open for twenty how have you not made a pizza yet? Geez, cya. Back to the pizza-place-rolodex I keep in my head. Typing this makes me feel even worse for what I did...I get off the highway and detour for a pizzeria I've never tried. I lock eyes with the warmer and make my way towards it. Thankfully, the cashier girl was on the phone so I wasn't pressured to order right away. I peered through the glass with raised eyebrows...Yucky... I casually strolled around acting as if I was still waiting for her to take my order. "Now is your chance, get out, get out, she's on the phone!" I thought... So I did. I walked out. I feel terrible but I did it. I know, that's bad. AND, in panic mode, I slapped my ass like I forgot my wallet just in case she was watching me. I know, that's worse.
How should I feel about this? I'm so conflicted. I am not trying to be a pizza snob and act like it wasn't up to my standards. I don't have any standards. I just simply can't like every pizza and I've accepted that. It's not possible and I knew this one would ruin my night. The sauce was brown, any moisture or grease dried out hours ago, and I think if I flicked the top of the cheese I would've hurt my finger. I eat A LOT of pizza and have had my share of bad slices, but I never walked out before...never. Even when I know the pizza has been sitting there for hours and there's no way it can be any good, I still muscle up and serve my duties as a pizza-lover.
The pizza Gods were testing me with that girl on the phone. Temptation. I was able to leave without verbally disrespecting the pizza and I did. I feel like a jerk.
Do I need to go to Slice Reconciliation?
-Alberto
PS - Pizza by the slice is a hard business. It's not easy to turn over pizzas at a rate where they all stay fresh.
